Studio D Foundation

Design for those who need.

About Us

Studio D Foundation is a nonprofit association that was founded on the belief that design services should be accessible to all. With a mandate to design for those who need, we serve populations suffering from natural disaster, crisis, and social insufficiency. We’re made up of architects, designers, educators and other professions who work for the public good. By working collaboratively we’re able to access illimitable expertise and boundless national resources.

Services

Domestic

Regardless of our income or place in life, we all desire a living environment that brings us comfort and provides a safe refuge. By utilizing local and federal grants, we work with individuals and families to create places that help overcome economic, social and environmental challenges.

Abroad

Oftentimes, natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, fire and war threaten whole communities. We strongly believe in working with needful communities abroad as opposed to working for them. In doing so, we hope to create spaces and environments that evolve out of the place and culture. We play a key role in designing structures, both permanent and temporary, to successfully accommodate disaster relief efforts.

Animal Welfare

While most pet owners would bring their pet with them during an evacuation, only a small portion of the population has a disaster preparedness plan in place. As we work with communities to create solutions for shelter, we also partner with agencies to assist with relocation, sheltering, search-and-rescue, and placement of animals during disaster situations. We seek funding that supports the need to design emergency, pet-friendly environments, making it easier for pet owners to shelter with their pets.

Research & Development

Studio D Foundation is committed to ongoing research projects that explore the use of low-cost, self-built modular structures that provide safe and secure emergency housing for their users. Made mostly from recycled materials, these units, known as eHomes and are designed with simplicity in mind, but to also be flexible and durable as well. Systems are designed to be interchangeable, allowing sleeping and eating surfaces to transform into a variety of configurations to suit user needs. A single eHome shelter can be assembled by two people in 60 minutes. Inspired by Swedish, low-tech ready-to-assemble furniture, each structure can be self-assembled using an L-style allen wrench (hex key). The dwellings can also easily be dismantled for relocation, expansion or recycling.
